Smallest Daisy Ever

I'm making some flowers for a really small vase that I made previously.

This is the only one of five that survived. I tried to trim the backs up and the petals all fell off and they generally broke up. I will remove any excess before baking in future.

I wanted to try out several things:

1. Spiky hair. I like the look of it. I put a skull cap of fimo on her and I tried attaching it to that, unfortunately it was really fiddly to attach, I couldn't press it down. Options for doing it differently are probably super-gluing baked or unbaked pieces or modelling a complete piece. Also the spikes are far too delicate and quite a lot of them snapped, so shorter and blunter spikes might work better. Will also try mohair soon instead of fimo.

2. Nose ring. Pretty good, but I'd attach jewellery before baking next time as the model is a bit too fragile to use pliers on, in case I slip.

3. Make up. I tried painting it on using acrylics and a tiny paint brush, but it's hard to paint that small with a steady hand. Could be impossible for me or I might just need more practice. I decided to model it in fimo instead. This make up looks really lurid and not as subtle as I would have liked, but the pneumatic lips on this head were one of the reasons it was rejected anyway.

I probably won't be giving Camilla a body (I feel a bit guilty about that!)

It's about time I put photos of these models up.

These were made for a commission for a friend of mine called Melissa who is a talented photography student. Check out her new photography blog.

Introducing Peter & Nancy & the kids Martin and Suzy. They are made out of polymer clay (fimo).

I learnt so much from building these models. I need to improve my anatomy greatly and these models didn't have any armatures which was a bad idea. All models will get armatures in future.

I found out about halfway through that multiple bakings would have been a good idea too.

I like Suzy the best (shhhhhh don't tell the others) 'cos I love her sandals, her flower t-shirt and her plait.

Less Than Six Months To Go

Six months to go at university.

I have absolutely no work to show for the period from the summer holiday until now and no ideas. I've fallen out with a tutor. I didn't get a work placement at the right time. I can't get my work placement tutor to speak to me. I should be in college today, but yesterday took it out of me so much I needed to hide today and lick my wounds.

Sorry to post a negative one for once, but I feel at my lowest ebb right now. My classmates had to talk me out of ditching the course yesterday, the wonderful people that they are.

On the plus side. I have a pile of research that needs compiling, a late work placement with some people who make wonderful work, a fair idea of what it is I want to do after Uni. Films to make, clay to play with. A supportive boyfriend and great family and friends who care about my well being.

Time to knuckle down.

Unexpected Exhibition Series

Here are some mocked-up pictures from a fictitious proposal for the local council. The proposal outlines an idea for a series of unusually placed exhibitions around Basingstoke. These photos are my own, but any content could be exhibited if the project becomes live. I like the idea of showcasing local artists (the type that don't mind their work getting rained on or vandalised!)

As part of the launch package I have designed some business cards which are a miniature version of the exhibition. Each exhibition would have its own different business card/mini exhibition. Click on pictures to see bigger versions.

I still have some of the childish experiments in art that he inspired me to do. I don't think I would be attempting to be an artist without his influence.

Financial Times Animation - Suzanna

The brief is to make film based on the phrase 'What Do You Want If You Don't Want Money'. After spending a fair bit of time trying to remove Adam Faith from my brain, this animation idea appeared.

The star of the film is Suzanna, she's made of plasticine and she needs a bit of remodelling as her head and legs keep falling off. I think it's because I've got her leant against an outside wall and she's getting too cold. She's not very pretty but it's personality that counts.

Yes I know she's not real, but she kind of is to me as she's been sat on my desk watching me for a couple of weeks now.

After pressing out the records I baked them and added labels before glazing them with shiny sealant. I got the labels by photographing my actual records and printing them off really small, after a bit of photoshopping.

Tiny Records - Tooling

So that's the main objects covered.

I had the best time making tiny vinyl records to put in the Joy object and here's what happened.

I wanted to make grooves in the records and I thought that coiling wire round a cone would make the wire spiral out, but it was rubbish. I couldn't make it work at all. I also tried winding the wire round itself, but it was still not workable.

I spent a bit of time pressing items in my house into Fimo to look for an idea and masking tape gave a good effect, so I made a tool out of a handle of a modeling tool with masking tape wrapped round. I tried pressing Fimo with it and it looked great but when I pressed the other side I lost detail so I realise I had to make another identical tool.

Love - Part 2

I made a triangular window out of balsa wood and cut a piece of glass to fit. Even though the window looks quite big it is quite hard to get much inside this object.

This object had a wireform and some unwanted Fimo as a base. I chose a heart shape as it just seemed like the obvious choice.

Fear - Part 2 (snake alert!)

Unfortunately to really see the face it needs a torch that can be shone through the grating, but just looking at it without good lighting, you can hardly see the face, although I do like the dungeony feel. I am thinking of getting a key ring torch to attach so people can look into the grating (if there's time!).

I decided to change the body colour from turquoise to black and add a little yellow (as in fear, yellow streak etc). To counteract the darkness a bit I decided to add a colourful snake to the piece, because snakes came up on a few surveys. I removed the grating and baked the snake on top of the face

Fear - Part 1

I did have trouble with this object. I think it is the weakest of the pieces. This object (unlike the others) doesn't have a door or window, although you can pull off the grating with a pair of pliers.

I constructed a box from card and foil and covered the card in turquoise fimo. I made a grating using the hot weld machine in the workshop. It smells really nice like fireworks when you use it. I baked the turquoise layer with the grating in place.

I went to Basingstoke Sofas to buy foam to line the case. I was really impressed by the cutting machine they had there, which is the same kind of machine that is used for cutting 100's of layers of fabric at once in the fashion industry. Much as I coveted the machine I couldn't help thinking that if I had one, it would only be a matter of time before I was heading off to casualty with my fingers in a seaside bucket! The foam only cost £3, which is a price tag any student would appreciate.

From Fabricland I bought some steamed velour (yum, sounds like dinner!) in black and in sparkly purple. I love the purple but think I will use the black as it will go better with all the colours.

I cut cavities out of the foam for the four main objects. It was really difficult to cut the foam with a scalpel and I could see why these kind of trays would normally be moulded!! They did come out a bit lumpy.

My initial thoughts on this project were to make a set of boxes that all fit together based on one of those old toys that have 12 blocks that make up 6 pictures. When it became apparent that the items were going to be quite large and that I wouldn't have 12 I had to have a rethink.

After some thinking and wandering round the shops looking at packaging and for inspiration I saw a flight case full of barbeque tools from Cargo. I bought it, took it home and stripped out the tools and part of the lining to accommodate my final pieces.

Joy (to the world)

I think the guilt was getting a bit depressing so here's a post about joy.

I've been forgetting to take my photos. It's a bit hard to stop and photograph whilst you are in the flow sometimes!!

Anyway.

I decided to try wireform for the base of this one, as I saw it in the college shop and thought it would work well, which it did (bloody hot coming out of the oven though, of course. Had to do the 'hopping round the kitchen with a hot thing' dance).

I used a Fimo I didn't like the colour of for the first layer. Then I baked it before adding the final yellow coat. I found that it was quite difficult to keep the yellow fimo clean (on account of me being such a scruffy, dirty urchin). I had to make a second porthole as the first one had no handles to be able to pull it off (d'oh!). I did try to retrospectively fit handles after baking but the Sculpey broke when I tried to make a hole in it with a dental pick.

(The porthole was made of metalic Sculpey. I think Sculpey is an American version of Fimo. I prefer the Sculpey, at least this grey metallic one, but it's quite hard to get hold of)

Panicking a bit. Too much to do still and deadline is 24th May.

Have decided to do just four main objects with little things inside. Have still got to do my concluding statement, survey results and research sketchbook. The emotions depicted will be Love, Guilt, Joy and Anger.

Guilt - Part 2

So I had to rethink this object. I discussed hinge options with my other half and he suggested a pin, which is better than the idea I had to make little proper hinges. So I snipped down two pins and pushed them into the frame top and bottom and through the door.

Next I built a box out of black card and lined it again with fabric. I attached the frame & door to the box. Then I purple Fimoed the outside of the box. I haven't decided if I want to bulk out the outside some more. It could probably do with a bit more for strength.

I baked it but the fabric discoloured in the oven! So I lined it again in red felt this time. The fabric was too dark anyway in the end. While it was baking I wrote a tiny letter and made an envelope to go in the box. The stamp on it is only 4mm wide. The words in the letter are for people I feel guilty about hurting in the past. I also had a key that I've kept to go in there, symbolising locking guilt away. I'll probably redo the letter as I bought some nicer paper today.

Guilt - Part 1

So the object I've been working on the last couple of days is the guilt object. I thought 'door' Lots of guilty secrets behind doors. I feel guilt about trashing the box, which our friends Stewart & Sarah gave us and who suggest I paint it up all arty....about 6 years ago. I feel guilt for not painting it and guilt for smashing it up (although it is now fulfilling it's artistic destiny!). I feel guilt about what we used to keep in it and guilt about wasting my life on that. I feel guilt that I never asked my other half if it was alright to smash up the box.

About the construction:
I made a tiny little door out of the balsa wood box. I carved out the panels both sides and used a yellow plastic pin as a door handle. I embedded the metal of the pin in the wood on the other side. I made a frame out of four bits of wood which I mitred and glued together with wood glue.

Next I took a polystyrene ball and carved out a box shape. I tried to line the box shape with some old plastic backed velvety box liner I had but it didn't really fit and I didn't have enough so I used some fabric instead.

The next thing I did was to cover the polystyrene ball in foil and then purple Fimo. I put it in the oven and disaster! The polystyrene had shrank and I didn't realise and crushed the object when I picked it up.

Hi there!

I've had some changes to my thinking about the project.

Originally I was going to make big shapes with apertures, portholes etc...then I made a tiny wooden door door and I got to thinking that I could have a lot of fun with the apertures, so I am going to make a series of apertures. Windows, doors, gratings etc...I want to put real glass in so I need to test it in the oven. I bought a glass cutter today. One of our framed pictures will be sacrificed to the god of projects (just as our wooden stash box was sacrificed to make the tiny door. I am in so much trouble for trashing our stuff . 'Oh god, what have you used now?' etc.., but it is for the guilt object, I suppose, so it fits, ha ha ha!)

Behind the apertures will be a series of miniature things. Things that sum up, or represent emotions for me or engender a certain emotion in me.

Today's Work - Gluing Coral and Sand

I tried sticking a bit of coral into the Fimo. After baking I tweaked it to see how strong it was and it came off easily. I was able to superglue it back in sucessfully, as the embedded shape was still there. So even if an item is likely to fall out of the Fimo after baking it is still a good idea to bake with it in place and then glue it back in afterwards. Also tried to see how a washer would work. It stayed in place even without gluing and I could not pull it off, I think this is due to the Fimo completely surrounding it.

Kitchen foil seems to be the best, choice. The Fimo sticks well and it is easy to shape the foil to required shape.

Pic 3 - Half made daisy in the freezer. I found freezing it was helpful as my hand and desk lamp made the clay a bit too soft. I made the yellow middle by rolling small yellow sausages and laying them all together.
Pic 4 - The final daisy. Baked for 25 mins at 130 degrees celsius. Inner of the daisy petals tinted with green acrylic paint and whole thing sealed with acrylic painting matt varnish.

I've been doing some clay modeling with Fimo, baking and gluing tests today.

Pics 1 & 2 - Mixing the the body colour out of white, orange and some yellow mixed.
Pic 3 & 4 - Assembly. Found it very difficult to keep the colours separate.
Pic 5 - Cap and stalk joined.
Pic 6 - Final assembly. Eyes fiddly due to tiny size. Added white dots. Final mushroom was baked in the oven for 25 mins at 130 degrees celsius. I was able to sand the mushroom to remove some unwanted colour with an emery board. Sealed the final mushroom with acrylic painting matt varnish.

Colours: I've been doing a lot of research into colour and the colours people associate with emotions. I've asked most people that I know what colour they think various emotions are and not everybody agrees. So either I will go with the majority view or just go with what I think.

Materials: I've researched various modeling clays and have bought some Fimo (cured by oven baking) and some Plasticroc (air cured). This site has exhaustive info about using polymer clays. This actual page was useful as I am a bit concerned about baking the clays in the oven where we cook our Sunday roast! I will be using bicarbonate of soda to hopefully absorb the smells. I have also been collecting various items for a while that I want to use to make the objects, bits of metal and plastic etc..I'll post some pictures later.

Packaging: Originally I was going to make boxes as I was really sad to lose my boxes in the 12 Objects Project and wanted to make some more. But a tutor suggested jars and I thought that was a better idea. I've spoken to my lovely friend Sandra Callowhill, who is a glass designer and maker. She is putting me in touch with somebody who can custom blow me some glass jars (if he has time). Here's the sketch I did for the jars:

Final Major Project - Statement of Intent

To begin this Blog proper as it is especially for my Final Major Project, here is my statement of intent (or project brief, if you prefer), which outlines my starting point:

Section 1 - PROGRESS AND ACHIEVEMENT THROUGH UNITS 1-7

I have come to understand that graphic design involves constant decision making, about the processes and systems, materials and methods to be used. I have learnt how important it is to document your own processes, thoughts and ideas, so you can refer back to them at a later date. In terms of tools, I am now able to produce a film using stills and video cameras and edit the film with iMovie. I know how to produce and bind a book using book cloth. I can develop a typeface using any source material available. I am able to screenprint.

Section 2 - PATHWAY CHOICE

I've always been very interested in anything printed; packaging, books, record covers, posters. I was involved in producing a punk zine in the late '70s. I am particularly inspired by paper engineering and origami, poster art, 1930's travel posters, Atelier Populaire/Situationist posters. I am fascinated by miniature items. Going forward, I want to make beautiful collectible printed items out of paper and card. I would like to produce interesting books. I will continue to learn about typography and elements of design and layout. I intend to find ways of minimising damage to the environment in terms of waste and the materials I use.

Section 3 - FINAL MAJOR PROJECT AIMS AND REALISATION

The aim of my project is to produce a set of packaged objects that represent different emotional states. To achieve this I will design and make objects and design, print and construct packaging boxes to contain the objects. I will include inside the box a leaflet that I have written and printed with information about the emotion.

I will research and compile a list of different emotions and devise a system to determine the colour and shape of the emotional object, including conducting a survey to ascertain other people's ideas of what the colour and shape of the emotions should be. I will investigate as many different materials and methods for the construction of the objects, boxes and leaflet as I can in the time allotted.

I will produce drawings by hand and in Illustrator to design the objects and the box graphics and I intend to screen print the leaflet and the designs onto the boxes. I will ensure that all the pieces that make up each individual package have a consistent design and that it is clear that all the packages belong to a set.

After my research I will need to obtain all the materials I have chosen to make all the items by the project deadline. I will need to supply the artwork for screenprints to the print workshop according to my schedule and ensure I can access the print workshop when I need to. I will print three sets to allow for any possible cutting or printing problems.

12 objects
On 1st March I started putting boxes out in the street on the way to the train station in the morning. When I got to the two outside the police station. Instead of placing them I bottled it and went inside to discuss it with them. I asked if they minded putting two pieces of art outside the police station. The male officer said 'no, I don't think we want that here'. I explained further. The female officer said that since it was litter they couldn't condone it as littering was an offence. Then she asked what course I was doing and wished me luck.

I carried on to the train station and placed/photographed the other boxes and went to college. On the way back in the afternoon I looked for the boxes. Only one was still there in town (the bottle top). I put the two police station boxes out, but not together as I found them. I put one of them at the other side of the entrance so they were not together. The ones on my estate had also gone.

As of today (7th March) all the boxes have gone and I have had no feedback sadly. I am starting to put the work onto my website here, but it's still in progress.

Paris Project
Finished the box but it ended up being cardboard instead of plywood. The wood was too thin to glue into the shape I wanted and also the vacuum form we tried to make just would not form properly. I made the screenprint out of a line art of one of my photos and printed a selection of cards and wood. I'll put the project here when I get a moment.

Typography Project
Finished. Made some giant models for my portoflio. I'll put the project here when I get a moment.

Heart health. I've logged my healthy/not healthy activities by day.
Am sewing hearts onto pin-tuck fabric which already has squares. The more red the heart is, the healthier I am. The more black it is, the less healthy I am. Not much time to get it finished!

50 Cracked Paving Slabs Book
I was encouraged to cover the book (by JB) and it was successful. So pleased I did it. Although I want to replace the inkjet label with screenprint as any splash of liquid will make it run.

The Word
Not done very much at all on this (due to portfolio preparation) , so have to catch up on it before next week and our assessments. Do have a huge list of words to choose from as we make up words all the time in our house!

Final Major Project
My idea is to make items made out of sculpey to represent an emotion, write a letter describing the emotion, make shredded packaging material with sentences conveying the emotion. make a box/seal to contain the item.

BA in Graphic Design
I'm delighted to say I've accepted a place on the BA in Graphic Design at Camberwell. Can't believe the foundation is nearly over already!

Current Projects

100 project (Xmas project)
10 drawings done, but late too late for crit. Plan to do other 90 and then put in a 10x10 advent calendar type affair.....100 doors...maybe

Paris Project:
Finished but want to put in an Eiffel tower shaped box. Also too late for crit.

Typography
Finished but want to put in a font making program and also make some models of the letters. Need to finish sketchbook.

12 Objects
Have picked up/photographed 12 objects in street, enduring strange looks from passers by. Plan to package each in a beautiful box before returning to the place I got them. Intend to include a letter with letterhead that matches the label on the box saying it's an art project and including my email address to see if anyone gets back to me. May lino cut for the label/letterhead

Thoughts:
Two of the boxes will be placed outside the police station, will that be a problem? Especially in light of this, although there will be no LEDs in mine and they will be small.
I could ask if it is okay but they might say no. So I won't.

1 minute film:
Would love to do, if I get time. But we have to do either this or the 12 Objects so probably won't do it.

CalendarClock:
Really worried, can't get an idea and time is passing. (LOL just noticed I mis-spelt this as Calandarcock. Freudian slip or what? :D)

Thoughts:

How do I mark time? Cups of tea, sleeping, showering
24 hour clock, what could I conceivably be doing at any point in 24 hours? Only sure that probably would be asleep between 4-5am otherwise could be doing many things.

100 project

Only did a half-assed job of my 100 project and so when it came to the crit I only had a badly scribbled list to show. I feel bad about it. Not because of being 'told off' or anything like that. Just because I know I could do a lot better. I'm not going to let it happen again and I will finish it too.

There was a lot of great work done by other people in the class as usual, bless 'em

We got our new timetable and also a list of new projects. We were briefed on the first one which is a typographic project. We are to create a typeface using architectural elements from around the college.

Long & Thin

Considering doing a really long thin picture like this for all my mechanisms (although this is a top to bottom pan from an animated film Automania 2000).

I think I'm going to do 100 mechanisms.

I've written about 108 down but not sure they all meet the criteria of a mechanism (i.e. they do not have two or more moving parts). I crossed off candle. My favourite one is 'ring with secret hinged top, for poison'.

I'm considering a tiny balsa wood chest of drawers or shelves 10 x 10 and a scroll in each compartment. But this may be too ambitious with Christmas happening.
